North Central's DeShawn Clark scored 22 points in a win over Pike Central.

SWITZ CITY — It wasn’t the place they wanted to be, but North Central made the most of where they were.

Tyler Vaughn and DeShawn Clark each scored 22 points to lead the Thunderbirds to a 65-55 victory over Pike Central as the Thunderbirds captured third place at the Greene County Invitational on Monday night.

“It is always tough to play in the third-place game,” said North Central boys basketball coach. ‘Everybody wants to be in the 7:30 p.m. (championship game).

“But I thought we came out and were able to bounce back after the way we played on Friday.”

Playing for just the second time in 19 days and twice after having one game canceled and one days in the GCI, the Thunderbirds continued to shoot better as the game progressed.

After forging a 26-21 halftime cushion, North Central made 6 of 11 shots in the third quarter, including three 3-pointers by Clark as the T-birds led 42-37 with eight minutes remaining.

“DeShawn did a good job of making shots or creating opportunities for his teammates,” said Edmondson. “If he couldn’t get all the way to the basket, he was able to find the open man.’

Vaughn scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including making 4 of 4 at the foul line in the final 43 seconds.

“We had played eight games without Tyler (broken foot) before he came back on Friday against Shakamak,” said DeShawn. “We had played eight games without him and then had to figure out how to learn to play with him again.

“I did a much better job tonight of working him into the lineup so he could take care of his skill set. He finished 9 of 11 at the foul line including those four big ones in the last minute.

While not making freebies, North Central made its final eight shots after missing just once to open the fourth.”

North Central finished 12 of 19 at the foul line compared to 8 of 11 for Pike Central

“As Bobby Knight used to say, ‘We want to make more free throws than our opponents shoot,” said Edmondson. “Tonight we were able to do that.”

Pike Central was led by Quade Morton, who scored a game-high 24 points. Julian Gish had 14 points and Kendric Sorgius scored 12.

“Though the tournament did not work out like we wanted, it was good to finish with a win,” said Edmondson.
