BASEBALL
Bloomfield 16, Dugger Union 0: Facing one of the better teams in a loaded Class 1A sectional field at White River Valley, the Bulldogs were no-hit in the season-ending loss.
The Cardinals scored in all five innings including five runs in the third and six more in the fourth.
Bloomfield pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of four Bulldog miscues in the sectional-opening win.
Boone Holtsclaw went the distance and struck out 13 batters in his no-no.
Bulldogs’ lead-off hitter Seth Fritzinger, who was named to the all-conference team in the Little Okaw Valley Conference earlier in the week, reached base twice on walks. Ryley Cobb also reached via a base on balls in the loss.
Dugger Union finished the season with a record of 7-15.
SOFTBALL
Clay City 9, North Central 2: For the second straight night the host Lady Eels defeated a local team. One night after sending Dugger Union home in the opening game, the Class 1A No. 13 ranked team handed the Ladybirds a season-ending loss in the first semifinal.
Clay City scored in the first five innings en route to the win.
Brynn Varner put North Central on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. Brynley Grabbe — who was inserted as a courtesy runner for Mykenzie Wence — scored on the play.
In the sixth inning, Wence doubled home Hope Crooks for the Ladybirds final tally of the game.
Shelby Seay, Crooks and Lilli Gaines all recorded singles in the loss for North Central.
Wence fanned seven batters in her 4.2 innings of work.
The Ladybirds finish the season with a record of 8-21.
Cloverdale 10, Shakamak 3: In Wednesday’s second semifinal at Clay City, the Lakers fell behind 9-0 and could not recover.
The Clovers scored four runs in the top of the second, added three more in the third and two in the fourth for the commanding lead.
Campbell Holler tripled home Jama Ewers in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the Clovers’ bid for a shutout. Madelyn Bennett followed with a walk, giving Shakamak runners on the corners with just one out, but left both runners stranded on base.
Camyrn Bryne hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Jaylen McCammon in the seventh before Holler scored the final run on a fielding error.
Holler finished with the only two hits of the game for the Lakers.
Cloverdale recorded nine hits and took advantage of seven Shakamak errors.
The loss ended the season for the Lakers with a record of 6-20.
