Saving a possession

North Central center Katie Jones goes to the floor to save a possession for the Ladybirds during a win over Owen Valley on Wednesday.

FARMERSBURG — North Central built a 15-point lead in the second half and held off a furious Owen Valley rally as the host Ladybirds defeated the Lady Patriots from Owen County 47-42 in a high school girls basketball game on Wednesday night.

The Ladybirds improved to 8-4.

“We beat a good team,” said North Central coach Joey Davidson. “I thought about calling a timeout during their run, but the girls need to learn to fight through times like this.

“We are going to have moments like that in the tournament that we have to learn to deal with. We grew up a little bit tonight.”

Paloma Keller, who had seven points, seven rebounds and three steals, scored as North Central pushed a 21-11 halftime cushion to 30-15 midway in the third quarter.

Owen Valley, who had missed 4 of 26 shots in the first two quarters, closed the third by making 5 of 7 shots, cutting the deficit to 30-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Owen Valley’s Reagan Martin warmed up in the second half, scoring all 13 of her points to go with 15 rebounds.

“Martin got it going for them In the third quarter,” said Davidson. “Our girls responded and got enough stops down the stretch to get out of here with a win.”

North Central built the lead back up to 12 points — 42-30 — after a basket by Sam Secrest .

But Owen Valley went on a 11-3 run, climbing to within 45-41 after a 3-pointer by Taylor York with 28 seconds to play.

Lilli Gaines and Jalyn Davidson each went 1 of 2 at the foul line to account for North Central’s final two points.

Overall, the Ladybirds were 12 of 26 shooting free throws. Davidson, who led North Central with 18 points, was 5 of 12, including 4 of 10 in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve got to be better than that,” said coach Davidson. “We gave away a lot of points at the foul line.”

Katie Jones scored 12 points to go with eight rebounds.

“We are getting better, but are not there yet,” said coach Davidson.

Owen Valley won the JV game 32-23.

The Ladybirds will play a varsity-only game at Lighthouse Christian Academy in the second half of a boys-girls doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
