With the exception of senior twins Gracie and Delainey Shorter, Sullivan coach Julie Meeks will have a young team in 2021-22.

“The twins are the only seniors we have,” said Meeks, who is 220-196 in her first 18 seasons at her alma mater. “They have played a lot of basketball over the last three years.

“Even though we don’t have any other seniors, we do have some girls that have played quite a bit, But we also have some girls that we expect to be playing their first varsity basketball.

Gracie, who averaged 18.8 points, 3/4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.1 steals per game last season, has already scored over 1,000 points in her career.

Delainey tossed in 12.6 ppg. as a junior. She also collected 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

“Obviously, Gracie and Delainey will set the tone for us on both ends of the court,” said Meeks. “Just like they have for the past three seasons.

“They have continue to improve throughout their careers. I expect both of them to have very good senior seasons.”

Center Klaire Williams returns at center. Last year, Wiliams averaged 7.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

“Klaire did the bulk of our rebounding last year,” said Meeks. “Hopefully, we will be able to help her our on the boards this year.

“She just continues to get better. She will be a big part of what we do this year.”

Avery Wiltermood, who scored 13 points in a 56-50 win over Vincennes Lincoln to start the season, also returns to the starting lineup. She averaged 5.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game last season.

“Avery is capable of making big shots,” said Meeks. “She also is a young player, but has played a lot of basketball.”

Williams was ill and unable to play against Vincennes Lincoln. Freshman Jackie Wilson stepped in and started at center. She scored six points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

“Jackie did a great job on the boards,” said Meeks. “She is almost 6-feet tall and will be a part of our rotation.”

Sophomores Lexis Drake and Laura Chastain are both recovering from knee injuries.

“It is still going to be a slow process back for both Lexis and Laura,” said Meeks. “Lexis just got released from the doctor.

“Laura was cleared earlier and is back playing the JV. We are looking forward to both of them eventually getting back to full strength.”

Kyla Perkinson averaged 1.3 points and 1. 1 rebounds in 11 varsity appearances a year ago.

“Kyla can come in and knock down shots for us,” said Meeks. “We expect her to be a part of our varsity rotation.”

Sophomore Kimber Ladson joins the varsity after playing at North Central a year ago.

“Kimber gives us another varsity player with experience,” said Meeks. “We are glad to have her.”

Sophomore Lexi Grindstaff will be in the rotation as a big for the Lady Arrows.

She played in 17 games a year ago, contributing 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds.

“‘Grindy’ gave us good minutes off the bench against Vincennes Lincoln,” said Meeks. “She will be another player that we expect to step up and rebound for us this year.

“We have more people to help our Klaire on the boards this year.”

Meeks said that Lauren Craighead returns with experience at the guard position. She averaged 0.4 points in 11 games last year.

Last year the Lady Arrows won 14 games and finished third in the Western Indiana Conference with an 8-2 mark.

“The conference will be very competitive again,” said Meeks. “There are several teams that will be competing for a conference championship. We expect to be one of those teams.

“…The sectional will again be competitive with Washington and Vincennes Lincoln. It was good to start with a win over Lincoln, but we have to keep working and improving to have the kind of season we would like to have.”
