Davidson continues to lead fortunes of Thunderbirds
FARMERSBURG — There will be several changes in the North Central girls basketball program in 2021-22, but one of them won’t be at the top.
Joey Davidson, former Sullivan boys standout, returns for his seventh season in charge of the Ladybirds.
Last year the Ladybirds were sectional runner-ups and finished 12-10 after having an injury-plagued season. School’s all-time leading scorer Avery Davidson played with a broken back all year and Courtney Williams, who finished as the all-time leader in assists, missed more than half the season after tearing her ACL.
Those two seniors along with double-figurer scorer Ally Compton and role-player Makenzy Haviland were lost to graduation.
Kimber Ladson transferred to Sullivan.
“We can’t look in the past,” said Davidson. “That group of seniors accomplished a lot during their careers.
“But now we have some returning kids and some new kids that I am looking forward to working with. It is always interesting to see how quickly a team comes together every season.”
Center Katie Jones returns for her junior season. She averaged 10.4 rebounds per game last year.
She also scored seven points per game.
“Katie just continues to work hard and improve,” said Davidson. “She ran cross country so she comes into the season in better condition.
“I am looking forward to seeing her continue to develop.”
Davidson said that sophomores Maggie Scott (6-foot) and Grace Scott (5-foot-10) have size and skills. Maggie averaged 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 19 varsity games while Grace played in seven varsity games, averaging 0.9 ppg and 0.3 rpg.
Senior Hope Boone played in just one varsity game last year and junior Abbie Morris did not play on the varsity.
Sophomore Lilli Gaines (20 games, 4.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg) returns with varsity experience for the Ladybirds.
Shelby Seay, Samantha Secrest, coach’s daughter Jalyn Davidson and Kennedy Bowling are four freshmen that coach is welcoming to the NCHS program.
“Probably three of the four freshmen will start,” said coach Davidson. “We will likely have a starting lineup of three freshmen, one junior and one sophomore.
“We are going to be young, but I am anxious to see how our young kids come together. They are going to play a lot for us. There is always a learning curve for the younger kids, but they will hit the ground running. I have been very pleased with how everybody has been getting along and playing together in practice.”
Junior Paloma Keller is a foreign exchange student who has stepped into the starting lineup at guard.
"Paloma has gotten off to a good start," said Davidson. "She does a lot of things well>"
“Even though we only have 11 players, we are going to have a JV team,” said Davidson, who will again have his wife Angel Davidson as his assistant. “We have had a JV with these kinds of numbers before so I don’t see any reason not to do it again.
“Linton has lost a few kids, but they are still very good and will be at the top of the conference. Bloomfield will be near the top of the conference and someone we will have to go through to win the sectional. But my goal has never changed. I want to be the first Ladybird team to win a girls regional.”
