North Daviess defeats Arrows in overtime
The battle between two of the best high school boys basketball teams in the Wabash Valley could not be settled in 32 minutes. It took until the final seconds of overtime before North Daviess senior Daryn Lengacher banked in a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer right in front of the Sullivan fans, giving the visiting Cougars (No. 4 in Class A) a 49-49 victory over Class 3A No. 8 Sullivan on Friday night.
The first meeting between the two schools in 19 years was worth the wait as the gym seemed full of fans (25% capacity) along with cheerleaders, Arrowettes and the band.
“The kid made a great shot,” Sullivan coach Jeff Moore said of Lengacher. “They hit another tough three on the possession before that.
“They made a couple of tough shots. They are a good team. We had our chances, but for the second time this year got beat on a last-second shot.”
Sullivan’s Randy Kelley and Lance Wilson traded baskets in the final 50 seconds of regulation, leaving the score deadlocked at 38-all, forcing the extra four-minute session.
After Hills won the tip, Braden Flanagan buried a 3-pointer after a pass from Randy Kelley, putting Sullivan in front 41-38 with two minutes and 42 seconds left in OT.
Lengacher made two freebies, but the Arrows still led 41-40 at the 2:03 mark.
Kelley, who tallied five assists and two rebounds, came back 17 seconds later with two foul shots of his own as the Arrows went back ahead 43-40.
Lance Wilson made 1 of 2 foul shots after grabbing an offensive rebound as the Arrows were ahead by two with 89 seconds remaining.
After Moore called a timeout, Sullivan went ahead 46-41 after a Kelley dish set up a 3-pointer by Rocco Roshel at the 1:17 mark.
Lengacher got through the Sullivan defense for a shot in the paint, making it 46-43 hosts with 68 ticks remaining.
North Daviess then missed a couple of layups. Then Sullivan went to the foul line on three consecutive possessions in the final 35 seconds with a chance to put the game away with free throws.
But Flanagan missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jackson Hills, who posted up for the first eight SHS points of the second half and scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the second to go with five rebounds, and Will King each made 1 of 2 free throws to leave the door open for the Cougars.
After Hills split a pair at the stripe, Markus Britton, who was sandwiched between two SHS defenders, swished a 3-pointer with 5.5 seconds to play, trimming the SHS advantage to 47-46.
King was fouled by Bryce Collins just .4 seconds later. He made the first for a 48-46 Arrow advantage but missed the second. The Cougars got the rebound and raced up the floor. Lengacher tossed in the game-winner from just inches inside of the sideline to hand Sullivan its first loss since Jan. 11.
Sullivan had its 10-game winning streak snapped, falling to 18-3. The Cougars, who got 11 points each from Lengacher, Jaylen Mullen and Logan Wilson, improved to 19-3 with its seventh-straight win.
Flanagan had 12 points and Kelley 10, giving SHS three players in double figures.
“We had our chances,” said Moore. “We missed key free throws.
“But this season is over and the real season is ready to begin.”
Sullivan lost the JV game 53-51, finishing the season at 12-5.
The Arrows will begin play at the Class 3A Washington Sectional 31 at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the host Hatchets.
“We are going to win it,” Moore said.
