Contributed photo: Sullivan eighth-grader Lane Gilbert, shown with medal, finished second in the 51 kilo (114.4 pounds) division in the freestyle competition at the inaugural USA Wrestling hosted by the UWW U15 Nationals at the brand new Papillion Landing in Omaha, Nebraska earlier this month. Gilbert also finished sixth in the Greco Roman competition. This earned him the distinction of being a Double All-American. This qualifield Gilbert to compete on Team USA at the Pan American Games in Panama City, Panama on Oct. 12-14. Sullivan High School wrestling coach Roy Monroe said that Gilbert has to raise over $3,000 for the trip. “Lane will be working out three days a week with Maurer Coughlin Wrestling Club out of Evansville. Plus he will still be competing in upcoming freestyle and Greco Roman tournaments as well as the prestigious tournament at Fargo, North Dakota in July. It takes a lot of work to get ready for a competition like this. Lane will be the first wrestler from Sullivan to be a part of the Pan Am Games while still attending SMS or SHS.” Gilbert is the son of Rachel and Brent Gilbert.
