North Knox edges Sullivan in overtime

BICKNELL — Grace Yochum’s free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining was the only scoring in overtime, giving North Knox a 50-49 comeback victory over visiting Sullivan in a high school girls basketball game on Wednesday night.
After a mad scramble in the paint, Yochum gained possession and was fouled on a shot attempt by Sullivan sophomore Courtney Lueking.
“I thought it was a bad call,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “Courtney again played a heck of a game.”
Yochum missed the first, the last of four consecutive misses by the North Knox junior, before bouncing in the second as the Lady Warriors improved to 15-5.
Sullivan’s only shot in overtime was a last-second full court heave by Reagan Holeman as time expired.
Before Yochum’s heroics, Sullivan appeared to be on the verge of holding off the North Knox comeback.
SHS freshman Gracie Shorter made two free throws with 4.8 ticks remaining in regulation, giving the Lady Arrows a 49-46 lead.
North Knox senior guard Makinzi Meurer, who was presented the ball before the game after becoming the all-time leading scorer recently for the Lady Warriors, calmly drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer, tying the game at 49, forcing overtime.
“Meurer is a great player,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “We did not want to foul her, but she did what great players do.
“I thought both teams were very cautious and a bit nervous in overtime. We had to play the overtime without Delainey Shorter, who fouled out in the final seconds of regulation. That hurt us.”
Sullivan, who dropped to 12-8, had three turnovers in the final minute of regulation and another three in the extra four-minute session.
The Lady Arrows finished with 18 turnovers.
“We did had too many mistakes,” said Meeks. “After we got up 25-12 in the second quarter,  I thought we would be able to play with enough patience to get the win.
“But you have to give North Knox credit. They continued to fight back and they took advantage of our mistakes.”
North Knox did not have the lead during the final 29 minutes of regulation. A jumper by Katie Kixmiller put the hosts ahead 12-10 before Sullivan closed the quarter on a 7-0 spurt as Delainey Shorter scored five points and Gracie Shorter the other two.
Sullivan’s forged ahead by 13 points after a 3-pointer by Delainey, who finished with 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting.
North Knox got back into the game slowly, cutting a 31-23 halftime deficit to 40-36 entering the fourth quarter.
Delainey’s 3-ball put SHS ahead 43-39 with 3:53 to play in regulation.
Two free throws by Meurer and two more by Graycie Poe and one by Lillie Cardinal, in the final 71 seconds of regulation kept the Lady Warriors within striking distance at 47-46 before Gracie’s freebies and Meurer’s jumper from about 25 feet.
Gracie tied her twin sister with 13 points and Holeman added 11.
Meurer finished with 22 points, giving her 1,634 points in her career. The senior is going to run track at the University of Evansville.
Poe scored 11 for the Lady Warriors.
Sullivan will host Brown County in a varsity-only game at 7 p.m. Friday to determine ninth place in the Western Indiana Conference.
