SULLIVAN — In a Western Indiana Conference girls and boys Western Division twin bill on Friday night, South Putnam and Sullivan each came away with a win.
In the girls game, South Putnam used a 9-2 start in the first quarter and a 8-0 run to begin the fourth as the Lady Eagles defeated Sullivan 67-57 to improve to 12-4 overall, 3-1 in the WIC.
The Lady Arrows slipped to 5-12, 1-3.
In the boys game, senior guard Ty Drake broke the school record with nine 3-pointers, scoring 37 points to lead Sullivan to a 75-38 victory.
Sullivan improved to 7-3 overall, 4-0 in the WIC.
South Putnam dropped to 6-5, 1-3.
The Sullivan girls scored the first two points on foul shots by Lindsey Hatch, but that was the only lead by the Lady Arrows.
South Putnam answered with nine straight points, including four by Lillie Stein and two by Caitlyn Capps.
That duo continued to be a problem throughout for Sullivan as Stein had 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Capps made 6 of 11 and tallied 15. Capps grabbed seven rebounds and Stein four.
“They weren’t tall, but they were strong,” Sullivan girls coach Julie Meeks said of the South Putnam duo. “They caused us a lot of problems in the post.
“South Knox really hurt us on the boards. They got some key offensive rebounds and putbacks that seemed to come at key moments. Those putback were really the difference.”
In the boys game, South Putnam put up a little resistance as the Eagles only trailed 17-11 after the opening quarter.
But the host Golden Arrows outscored the visitors 23-5 to take a 40-16 lead at intermission.
“We shot the ball really well tonight,” said Sullivan boys coach Jeff Moore. “When that happens, it opens up things and makes everything easiier.”
Drake scored 21 points of his career-high 37 points in the second half.
He made 13 of 18 shots overall and both of his foul shots.
His nine treys broke the previous mark of eight in a game, owned by Sullivan’s second all-time leading scorer Joey Davidson. Drake only missed 2 of 11 attempts from distance.
“Ty was just on fire,” said Moore. “Everything he put up was going in.
“There was some confusion whether he had broken the record. He thought he had eight, but it turned out he has set the record with nine.”
The South Putnam girls finished with four players in double figures.
Lexi Vanihel made 5 of 6 shots and Miranda Bieghler made 4 of 8, including 2 of 4 from 3-point distance. Both finished with 13 points.
“They came in here with 11 wins,” Meeks said of South Putnam. “They are a very good team.
“Once again, we can play good basketball against good teams. But unfortunately we are unable to sustain that level of play.”
Three steals by the Lady Eagles keyed the 8-0 start to the fourth quarter, pushing their advantage to 53-38. Sullivan got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Reagan Holeman led Sullivan with a game-high 19 points. Sydney Akers and Hatch each finished with 12.
“We scored 57, but we turned the ball over too much and gave up too many offensive rebounds,” said Meeks.
For the Sullivan boys, sophomore forward Kevin Figg scored 13 points and Sam Steimel made 4 of 8 shots and scored a season-high 10.
Allen Pinkett led South Putnam with 14 points and Dalton Scott chipped in with 12.
The Sullivan girls will host North Central on Tuesday. After beating North Knox on Saturday, the SHS boys will play at West Vigo at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a varsity-only game.
