This year’s class of 2019 Military Send Off will be at the Sullivan Elks Lodge tonight.
“It will be just as it was last year with the Elks Veteran’s Association feeding the recruits and their parents a free steak dinner,” Cindy Julian, an organizer for the event, said.
The dinner will start at 5 p.m. with the doors opening to the public at 6. The program will begin at 6:30. There will be seniors from all three Sullivan County schools in attendance.
During the program, there will be several speakers as well as a chance for the recruits to speak if they would like.
Last year was the first time for the event but the organizers plan to have this annually.
“Myself and another parent started this last year and got a local veteran involved to help so the three of us have decided to make it an annual event,” Julian said.
For the dinner and program, this year’s event will be similar. To start the program, North Central High School senior Lauren Schloegl will perform the National Anthem and Tom McClanahan will introduce the new recruits.
“It will be very much running like it did last year,” Julian said. “We will have cake for the public as well as the chance to write a letter of encouragement to each of the recruits that their parents can send to them while they are at boot camp.”
The guest speakers this year will include Kevin Arnett, Navy/Air Force; Ira Irvin, Marine Corps; Danielle McKinney, Coast Guard mother; Gabe Dunivan, Army; Doug Followell, Army; Josh Samm, Army; Zach Brooks, Army; William Andrews, Army; Amber Van Ness, Air Force; and Shawn Craighead, Army.
