Black Division defeats Gold 32-28 in Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star game
TERRE HAUTE — A 49-yard touchdown pass from Owen Valley quarterback Daniel Burkett to Olney’s Braxton Burgener with two minutes and three seconds remaining gave the Black Division a 32-28 victory over the Gold Division in the Wabash Valley Coaches Association All-Star Game on Saturday at Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium.
The game-winning play came on fourth-and-eight from the Gold 49-yard line as Burgener found himself all alone behind the Gold defense.
North Central’s Colton Stevenson and Chase Wiseley and Dakota Caton, JC Wallace, who intercepted a pass, Nathan Queen and Wes Bedwell from Sullivan all suited up for the Gold Division squad. Sullivan coach Blaine Powell was the offensive coordinator for the Gold.
The Gold team, led by Eastern Greene quarterback Caleb Hamilton, amassed 370 yards of total offense compared to 283 for the Black Division.
Hamilton, who is bound for Indiana State University, threw for 191 yards and rushed for 65 more. He tossed one TD and ran for two more.
His 45-yard TD run and PAT by Ben Carr put the Gold ahead 28-26 with just under eight minutes remaining
The Black team was paced by South Vermillion quarterback Conner Dunegan, who rushed for a game-high 72 yards and threw for 58 yards. Dunegan did not throw a TD pass but Black Division quarterback Burkett threw two, including a 12-yarder to Burgener in the second quarter that put the Black Division ahead 12-7 at the half.
Brody Spencer tossed an 18-yard score to Terre Haute South’s Elijah Rivera in the third quarter. Rivera had four catches for 49 yards and scored on an 89-yard kickoff return.
The Black team used a 15-play, 73-yard drive in the second quarter to score.
Garrett Frank’s 3-yard run gave them a 6-0 lead with 9:38 left in the first half.
Hamilton then answered with a 1-yard scoring run. His 46-yard pass to Rockville’s Wesley Cottrell was the key play on the drive. Carr’s kick put the Gold team ahead 7-6 at the 5:25 mark of the second quarter.
A Spencer-to-Rivera 18-yard TD pass and two-point conversion pass from Spencer to Carter Herrin at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter put the Black Division ahead 20-7.
Hamilton connected with Cumberland’s Tyson Magee for a 72-yard touchdown pass as the Gold cut the lead to 20-14 after another PAT by Carr with 6:05 left in the third.
Rivera then took the ensuing kickoff at the 11 and rambled 89 yards untouched as the Black Division went ahead 26-14
Peyton Doughty of Newton had a 4-yard TD run and Carr booted another PAT as the Gold team climbed to within 26-21 just three seconds into the fourth quarter.
Four-and-half minutes later, Hamilton’s run and Carr’s boot gave the Gold Division a 28-26 lead.
