Sullivan more competitive in loss to North
TERRE HAUTE —The Sullivan High School girls tennis team concluded the 2018 season with a 5-0 loss to Terre Haute North in the semifinals of the Terre Haute South Sectional on Wednesday.
The Lady Arrows, who lost to the Lady Patriots by the same score 15 days earlier, finished with a 9-9 record.
“We came out and were very competitive at virtually every position,” said Sullivan coach Wes Kirk. “I was very happy about that.
“Give North credit, they were able to make some adjustments and made it a little tougher on us in the second sets.”
Kirk will lose seniors Gabby Burkhart, Janae Willis and Lydia Sharp from his starting lineup and Jaydyn Rickard.
Burkhart won a tiebreaker 7-3 in the second set against North’s Gwen Stewart, but fell in the third set.
“I loved watching Gabby compete,” said Kirk. “I think we won more games tonight at every spot than we did the first time we played them. That was encouraging.
“It is always tough to lose seniors. They have meant a lot to the program. But the good thing for us is we have a lot of younger players who have a lot of potential. If they continue to put in time during the off season, we will continue to improve.”
Terre Haute South beat West Vigo 5-0 in the other semifinal
South and North will meet in the title match at 5 p.m. today.
“I was really proud of all the girls,” said Kirk. “We had another good season and hope to continue to build the program.”
