For the second time this season, North Knox defeated Sullivan in a high school girls basketball game, but this time the game was decided early.
On Thursday, the visiting Lady Warriors beat SHS 72-32. They improved to 17-3 while Sullivan fell to 6-14.
Back on Dec. 22 at the Vincennes Lincoln Holiday Tournament, Sullivan battled until the end, but North Knox held on for a 48-43 victory.
This time, North Knox left no doubt about the outcome as they made 10 of 18 shots and raced to a 22-1 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Sullivan missed all nine attempts in the first quarter to go with eight turnovers.
“This was a very disappointing effort,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “The last time we played them it was a five-point game.
“Tonight we just let them do whatever they wanted on offense and we did not make a basket in the first quarter.”
A free throw by Sheyanna Ravellette was the only scoring for the Lady Arrows in the first quarter.
A 3-pointer by Reagan Holeman with seven minutes and 20 seconds left in the second quarter was the first basket for the hosts.
They only made 2 of 22 as they trailed 37-7 at intermission.
“I was very surprised at the outcome,” said Meeks. “I know we had not played in a week, but they hadn’t either.”
Reeva Hammelman (21) and Makinzi Meurer (20) combined for 41 points to lead the Lady Warriors. They combined for 39 in the first meeting.
“They have two very good guards,” Meeks said of the North Knox duo. “We did not have an answer for them tonight as they knocked down shots and got to the basket.”
Holeman led the Lady Arrows with 14 points and Ravellette had nine points and 19 rebounds
Sullivan won the JV game 31-21.
Sullivan will play its Western Indiana Conference crossover game at 6 p.m. tonight at Cloverdale. The Lady Clovers defeated Cascade on Thursday in double overtime. The game will determine seventh place in the conference.
Sullivan will host Linton on Tuesday and Marshall, Illinois on Thursday to conclude the regular season.
Pairings for the 43rd annual IHSAA girls state tournament will be announced on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. with Bob Lovell and Pat McKee hosting the show.
The two-hour program will stream exclusively on the IHSAA’s video portal at IHSAAtv.org (no television) and via affiliates of the IHSAA Champions Radio Network.
