DUGGER — The Dugger Union girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with two wins over the weekend.
The Dugger Union boys slipped to 0-7 after two losses.
On Friday, the Lady Bulldogs raced to a 15-5 lead and went on to defeat Bloomington Home School 50-29 as Brook Everson scored 14 points and Kaylee Ballard made three triples and scored 11 points.
On Saturday, after scoring four points in her return from an injured knee on Friday, Autumn Everson made 5 of 8 shots and 7 of 11 free throws, scoring 19 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated visiting North Vermillion 49-39.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 4-3 while the Lady Falcons slipped to 6-4.
“It is great to have Autumn back,” said Dugger Union girls coach Joe Pigg. “She is our point guard and she does a good job of trying to get us into our stuff.
“The girls and I have not had much time together. They are just learning what I want them to run. But they are working hard and trying to do what I ask them to do.”
On Friday, host Bloomington Home School outscored the visitors 34-24 in the second half and recorded a 53-40 victory over the Bulldogs in a boys game.
At home on Saturday, the Bulldogs had more turnovers (29) than points in a 57-21 loss to North Vermillion, who improved to 4-1.
“We are still trying to find guys that have the wants,” said Pigg. “The want to compete at this level.
“We have decided to go with the younger kids, who are willing to try and run the offense the way we ask them to. This is still a learning experience for all of us.”
Zach Wall scored 15 points against Home School while Mason Boyd led with 13 points against North Vermillion.
The Dugger Union girls led 21-14 at the half, but a 9-0 start pushed its cushion to 30-14 after Autumn Everson scored on a pass from Brook Everson.
But North Vermillion answered with a 14-0 spurt, cutting the lead to 30-28 in the final 82 seconds of the third quarter.
Autumn Everson made four free throws as Dugger Union led 34-28 after three.
“Our ability to hold them off was a big part of that win,” said Pigg. “We never let them get the lead again after we trailed 4-0 to start the game.”
Dugger Union used a 9-0 run to take a 9-4 advantage to start the second quarter.
The Lady Falcons never got closer than one point in the first half and two in the second.
“The girls showed a lot of heart,” said Pigg. “It was nice for the girls to get two wins this weekend.”
The Dugger Union boys never recovered after falling behind 21-4 after the opening quarter to North Vermillion, who was led by the trio of Jonathon Kilgore (16), Trevor Eppert (14) and Trey Naylor (14) who combined for 44 points on 18 of 34 shooting.
The Dugger Union girls will host Palestine, Illinois in a varsity-only game on Tuesday that starts at 6:30 p.m., while the Dugger Union boys will have a road game against the South Knox JV team at 6 p.m. Friday.
Both teams will play a varsity-only twin bill at Washington Catholic on Saturday, starting with the girls at 6 p.m.
