FARMERSBURG — Linton pushed its record to 4-0 with a 77-65 victory over host North Central in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference girls basketball game on Thursday night.
It was the conference opener for both teams. North Central slipped to 3-2.
“We have played five very good teams,” said North Central coach Joey Davidson. “Linton is right up there with Cloverdale and Vincennes Lincoln.
“They will be one of the best teams we face all year.”
After the opening quarter, which was tied at 20-20, Linton outscored the Ladybirds by eight points in the second quarter and two each in the third and fourth quarter.
“This was our best win so far,” said Linton coach Jared Rehmel. “They are really quick and get up and down the floor.
“They are going to win a lot of games.”
The Lady Miners placed four players in doubles figures, led by Aubrey Burgess. The freshman had a game-high 22 points. Freshman Vanessa Shafford tossed in 21 points while Haley Rose and Mattia Potter each added 10.
Davidson said the biggest difference was the rebounding. Linton ended up with a 54-35 advantage, including 22-17 on the offensive end.
“They killed us on the boards,” said Davidson. “The second-chance points were the difference in the game.”
The Ladybirds only had nine turnovers and forced Linton into 19.
“That is the third straight game where we have had nine turnovers or less,” said Davidson. “I don’t think we played that badly.
“It was a four- or five-point game most of the way.”
Courtney Williams led the Ladybirds with 19 points while Averi Davidson scored 16 points before fouling out in the final four minutes.
Rachel Shroyer had 14 points and seven rebounds while Jocelyn Cox grabbed nine rebounds to go with four points.
Brinley Stone added eight points.
“Brinley played better,” said coach Davidson.
In the junior varsity game, Linton won 55-21.
Rachel Nichols had eight points, Alexa Crouch seven, Mackenzie Haviland four and Karina Valentine had two. Beverly Nichols, Lauren Fisher and Ashlie Bryant also played.
North Central will play a varsity-only game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Eminence.
