DUGGER — Dugger Union outscored visiting White River Valley 22-12 in the fourth quarter and overtime to pull out a 44-41 victory in a high school girls basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-0 while White River Valley dropped to 0-4.
“The girls just wouldn’t quit,” said Dugger Union coach Anthony McKinney. “Even though we trailed for most of the game, they never gave up and just kept battling.
“They really wanted it.”
After an early 5-2 lead by the home team, WRV scored the final seven points of the quarter and led 9-5 after the opening eight minutes.
The Lady Wolverines continued to hold on to the lead as they were up 21-13 at the half and 29-22 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Dugger Union found itself in a 35-26 hole after WRV guard Addison Graves, who scored a game-high 22 points, got in the paint for two with three minutes and 28 second remaining.
The Lady Bulldogs closed with an 11-2 spurt to force overtime.
After a timeout, senior guard Kyndall Foli drilled a 3-pointer from the baseline, cutting the advantage to 35-31 with 2:40 left. Foli made 3 of 6 treys and tallied a team-best 11 points.
“It was good to see Kyndall hit that shot,” said McKinney. “She has spent so much time in the gym this summer.
“She has had to overcome injury and illness.”
After WRV missed two free throws, a theme as the game progressed, senior Brook Everson knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing, cutting the deficit to 35-34 with 1:43 to play.
Everson scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter and overtime. She scored on a two-pointer just before Foli’s trey and then hit another 3-pointer in overtime, giving the winners a 42-40 lead with 90 seconds to play.
“Brook really hit some big shots when we needed them,” said McKinney. “It is not easy for her to play without her sister (Autumn Everson, who was missing because of a knee injury).”
The Bulldogs got a basket by Hannah Smith and a foul shot by Rainy Kinnard in the final minute of the fourth to force overtime. Kinnard hit two foul shots in the final seconds of OT to seal the victory.
Kinnard finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.
“Rainy plays with so much heart,” said McKinney. “She gives us everything she has every night.
“I ask her to play everywhere from 1-5. She also got a big stop for us.”
McKinney also commended the play of Mia Marlow and Zoe Smith, saying they both played their butts off.
Each team had trouble handling the ball. Dugger Union was credited with 34 turnovers, five more than WRV. The Lady Wolverines missed 8 of 16 free throws, including 6 of 9 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Dugger will play another varsity-only home game against Oblong, Illinois on Tuesday. Start time is 6:30 p.m.
