Lady Arrows fall at volleyball regional
CORYDON — In a battle of 30-win teams in the semifinals of the Corydon Central Regional on Saturday, Heritage Hills lost the opening set before defeating Sullivan 20-25, 25-22, 25-8, 25-13.
“We are obviously disappointed,” said Sullivan coach Sue Chagnon, who led the Lady Arrows to their first regional appearance in eight years. “We came in here with a lot of confidence.
“We executed our game plan in the first set.”
Chagnon said the Lady Patriots changed their attack and her Lady Arrows were unable to adjust.
“We had watched them on tape and they weren’t a tipping team,” said Chagnon. “But they adjusted around our blocks and just tipped us to death.
“They were taller and able to see over our defense. They found the openings. They are a very good team.”
Sullivan led throughout the opening set, only trailing at 11-10, and jumped out to an 8-2 advantage after one of eight kills by senior Adison Perry.
Asia Povlin, who led SHS with 13 kills, put down two winners at the net as the Lady Arrows went ahead 15-13.
Heritage Hills, who improved to 31-4, got as close as 18-17 and 19-18, but Sullivan finished off the set with a kill by Perry and a hitting miscue by the Lady Patriots.
Set No. 2 was the exact opposite as Heritage Hills jumped out to a 12-6 advantage.
Sullivan (30-6) got as close as 21-19, but senior setter Abby Wetzel tipped home a winner on set point.
Heritage Hills scored the first four points of the third set as Sullivan remained on their heels. The Lady Arrows did not score a single point on their serve, falling behind in sets 2-1.
Perry had back-to-back winners and senior Ryli Bobbitt served an ace as Sullivan led 6-4 in the fourth set.
But a kill by Melissa Bell put the Lady Patriots on serve. Bell then made 13 serves in a row as Sullivan made five errors and was aced twice as Heritage Hills took a 17-6 cushion.
“Our serve receive was not very good today,” said Chagnon. “They had some top spin on their serves and we did not react to that very well.”
Senior Lexi Netherlain made three serves in a row as Sullivan cut the deficit to 22-11, but 6-1 Heritage Hills senior Abby Wahl, who had 21 kills and just three errors, put down a winner on match point.
“This is not the way we wanted our season to end,” said Chagnon. “They worked hard all season and the gears finally clicked together a couple of weeks ago.
“The disappointing part was we did not play like we are capable of playing. Part of that was because of Heritage Hills. It is always tough to walk into the locker room for the last time and try to console them. That is a hurt that doesn’t go away for a while.”
Netherlain had 32 digs in her final appearance for SHS. She finished as the career digs leader.
Bobbitt had seven kills and two blocks and Perry added 17 digs.
“We are going to miss Lexi, Ryli and Adison,” Chagnon said of her three seniors. “These girls worked so hard for the last four years and gave us everything they had.
“They will go down as being a part of one of the best volleyball teams in Sullivan history.”
