No. 8 Thunderbirds roll by Trojans to stay undefeated
North Central, ranked No. 8 in Class A, remained undefeated after a 41-2 victory over host Wood Memorial in a Southwest Conference game on Friday night.
The Thunderbirds pushed its record to 8-0, 3-0 in the conference.
“We pulled our starters after the first quarter,” said North Central football coach Travis Nolting. “It was 27-0 after the first quarter.
“We used a running clock after that.”
Dawson Basinger led the offense with 170 yards and three TDs on the ground.
Blake Chatman added 103 yards rushing and one score.
Quarterback Ty Thompson threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Bonacorsi.
Backup quarterback Jayden Cowden added a 39-yard rushing TD.
“We tried to make sure and do our job and play assignment footbal,” said Nolting. “We were able to get some of our younger guys some meaningful reps.
“We wanted to stay injury free and we did that tonight.”
Wood Memorial’s score was a safety, which was set up by a punt at the 5-yard line.
“Two plays after the punt, our JV guys got tackled in the end zone,” said Nolting.
He added that their defense, led by the JV players, kept the Trojans out of the end zone.
“We had a lot of younger players flying to the ball,” said Nolting.
North Central will play at Eastern Greene at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Thunderbirds from Greene County are also 8-0, 3-0 in league play.
Eastern Greene defeated Linton for the first time on Friday 35-12. It was their first victory over the Miners.
“The conference championship and the Traveling Thunderbird Trophy will be on the line,” said Nolting. “You will have two undefeated teams playing.
“It should be one of the top games in the state. We are looking forward to it.”
