FARMERSBURG — In a battle between Sullivan County teams, the visiting Lady Arrows of Sullivan defeated North Central 25-8, 25-16, 25-16 in a nonconference high school volleyball match on Thursday night.
The Lady Arrows improved to 17-3 while North Central dropped to 4-16.
“I was surprised by North Central’s defense,” said Sullivan coach Sue Chagnon. “When you look at their record and some of their scores, I was not anticipating them playing as well defensively as they did.
“Kudos to them.”
North Central coach Matt Rinck said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“If we had of played like this, we could have won our six matches,” said Rinck. “There was no doubt that this was as well as we have played all year.
“The girls were all over the floor and were scrappy. We still had problems generating a lot of offense against a good Sullivan team.”
North Central led 2-0 after a kill by Cheany Deckard with Malee McCoskey on serve.
But Sullivan scored 10 of the next 11 points to take command.
Adison Perry had seven of her 15 kills in the opening set.
Ryli Bobbitt and Lexi Netherlain each had service runs of eight in a row, as the Lady Arrows took leads of 10-3 and 20-7.
In the second set, Sullivan scored 12 of the first 16 points and was comfortably in front before North Central got as close as 21-15 on a hitting error by Sullivan with Zoe Lowrance serving.
In the third set, North Central had brief leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before Sullivan scored on a ball from Netherlain in the back row, taking a 15-6 cushion.
Lowrance had a block to cut the lead to 21-14, but Sullivan closed on a 4-1 advantage to end the competition.
“The girls followed the game plan exactly as we had drawn it up,” said Chagnon. “We were able to work on running some different things out of our offense.
“North Central runs a slower offense and the girls did a very good job of making adjustments on the fly.”
Asia Povlin (15) and Netherlain (10) combined for 25 digs and Emma Royer passed out 18 assists.
Malee McCoskey had 18 digs to pace North Central.
Sullivan won the JV match 25-12, 25-10 as Annie Smith served five aces. Kyli Wagaman had eight kills.
Sullivan will compete in the Jasper Invitational, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. In pool play, they will face Loogootee, Castle and Evansville Memorial before a crossover match.
“Last year, we went 2-2 down at Jasper,” said Chagnon. “There is some really good competition, something we like to see.”
North Central will play at Robinson, Illinois on Monday, starting with the JV contest at 6:30 p.m.
