Lady Arrows edge West Vigo
The Sullivan girls tennis team pushed its record to 6-2 after a 3-2 win at home against West Vigo on Wednesday.
The Lady Arrows are now 2-1 in the Western Indiana Conference.
“This was a great win,” said Sullivan coach Wes Kirk. “I am so proud of the girls.
“I am every excited to have started this year 6-2.”
The doubles teams of Hannah Russell and Janae Willis and Brooke Lueking and Lydia Sharp won in straight sets.
At No. 3 singles, freshman Abbie Pirtle rallied from a set down to defeat West Vigo’s Taylor Farris.
“In my 18 years of high school coaching, I have not seen many come back as good as Abbie’s,” said Kirk. “If it is not the best, it is right up there.
“She was down 5-2 in the second set and rallied to force a tiebreaker. Our doubles teams both played well. Gabby (Burkhart) and McKenzie (Gentry) each ran up against good players at one and two singles.”
Sullivan won the JV match 5-4.
The Lady Arrows will host Vincennes Lincoln at 5 p.m. today in a match that was rained out earlier this month.
Their match on Thursday at Bloomfield was rained out.
