Sullivan has struggled shooting free throws throughout the season. But at home on Tuesday night, the Golden Arrows made 13 of 15 in the fourth quarter, holding off Bloomfield for a 53-46 victory in a non-conference high school boys basketball game.
For the game, Sullivan shot 79 percent, making 15 of 19.
In the final eight minutes, Evan Conner hit 7 of 9, Trevor Magill connected on 4-for-4 and Shane Garner made a pair in as many attempts.
Sullivan only made 1 of 5 field goals in the fourth quarter — a trey by Ty Drake to put the Arrows ahead 40-27 with six minutes and 16 seconds to play. They scored their final 13 points at the foul line.
“We have missed free throws all year,” said Sullivan coach Jeff Moore, who celebrated his 56th birthday with his 394th career win at SHS. “I was glad to see us hit them, especially with Bloomfield trying to come back on us.
“We have continued to work on them in practice and tonight we took advantage when they put us on the foul line. Evan, Trevor and Shane all stepped up and made free throws in the fourth.”
Bloomfield, who had two in a row against Sullivan and lead the series 22-16 since 1994, has now lost eight of 10 against the Arrows, who improved to 12-9 with the victory.
Bloomfield, who made all six of their free throws and made 6 of 12 shots in the fourth quarter, dropped to 10-11. For the game, the Cards were 10 of 13 at the foul and made 15 of 35 shots (43 percent).
“We beat a good team tonight,” said Moore. “They have been playing better lately after getting (Chris) Gilmore back.”
Sullivan led 15-9, 24-17 and 37-27 after the end of the first three quarters.
“We were pretty much in control throughout,” said Moore. “I thought we did a good job defensively against them.
“We played good post defense and I thought that Trey Powell did a good job making Gilmore earn his points.”
Conner led the Golden Arrows with 16 points and three assists.
Trevor Magill tallied 14 points, three rebounds and one steal.
“Trevor has been shooting it well lately,” said Moore. “He had eight points in the first quarter as he helped us get off to a good start.
“He has been shooting with a lot of confidence lately. It is good to have him back after he missed a couple of games.”
Drake added nine points and Ike Chastain had seven points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks.
In the JV game, Sullivan improved to 15-2 with a 40-22 victory.
Dillon Kinnett (12), Jackson Shake (11) and Ben Pirtle (10) combined for 33 points.
Kevin Figg scored five points and Nick Hornback added two.
Jared Woodard, Kaleb Thrasher, Jake Steele, Riley Smith, Christian Simpson, Dane Moody and Spencer Pirtle also played.
